ILLMAN (Artist)

Young Asian Artist. Studied modern art in Keio University.

Has been a victim of Asian-hate, and once lost a home by an earthquake.

Has once became addicted to alcohol and sex.

Contradiction of “Expectation” and “Tolerance” is the key of art works.

ILLMAN(アーティスト)

若年のアジア人アーティスト。慶應大学で現代アートを学ぶ。

アジアンヘイトの経験や、地震による被災で家を失った経験がある。

アルコール依存症になったり、性依存症などにもなった経緯を持つ。

「期待」と「許容」というねじれた表裏を、作品に込めた。

 

WHAT'S ILLMAN?

ILLMAN is a deformed self-portrait.

 

ILLMAN has the potential to make anything come true, to communicate, to take many forms, and to do whatever I want on my behalf. As long as I keep drawing.

「ILLMAN（ビョーキのひと）」は、私自身の自画像をデフォルメ化したキャラクターです。

 

ILLMANはあらゆることを叶え、伝える可能性を秘めており、様々な形に姿を変えて、私とあなたの代わりにやりたい放題してくれるのです。私が筆を進める限りは。

 

CONCEPT

The concepts of ILLMAN are “Expectation” and “Tolerance”. These two words seem to be  the head and tail of a coin, but there’s actually a conflict.

Normally, people feel anger when their expectations are betrayed. For example, when you ordered a cheeseburger, but they gave you a sashimi burger, most of the people would get angry. As you can see, the back of the “expectation” is an “anger”.

In ILLMAN’s work, you’ll never see that anger. Look at his thumb. It’s pointing up, right? You can destroy your kidney by drinking too much, you can do a meaningless workout to justify your gluttony.

ILLMAN will tolerate your desire, weakness, and ugliness.

And when you are satisfied on facing these, I want you to feel “It’s showtime”. I want ILLMAN to be your talisman to motivate you.

That’s all I work for.

作品の根幹にあるのは「期待」と「許容」です。一見、表裏一体に見えるこの２単語は、実は矛盾しています。

通常、期待を裏切られると人は怒りを感じます。チーズバーガーを頼んだのにも関わらず、サシミバーガーが出てきたら１０人中８人のひとはクレームをつけるでしょう。このように、期待の裏返しは本来「怒り」なのです。

ILLMANでは「怒り」を表現しません。彼の親指を見てください。上を向いているでしょう？酒を飲んで肝臓を壊すもよし、自己満足的で無意味な筋トレをして、暴飲暴食の免罪符にしてもよし。

やりたいこと、弱く醜く生きること。そのすべてをILLMANは受け入れます。

自身の望みを反映させたILLMANを見て、満足して、それから少し「頑張ってみようかな」という気持ちになってもらえたら。ILLMANがあなたのお守りになってくれたなら。

私にとってこれ以上の幸せはありません。
